FABBY
Multi-Action Probiotic and Prebiotic Digestive Supplement for Horses
Kohnke’s Own FABBY has been formulated using the latest scientific knowledge in probiotic and prebiotic research, specifically to improve digestive health and function which is crucial for an efficient gastro-intestinal system of all horses regardless of age, diet and exercise levels.
Many horses also have digestive challenges including feed or grass sensitivity, lack of pasture access, scouring, intermittent loose or acidic ‘cow pat’ manure. These horses may show irritability, poor manure formation, bloated, gassy problems or be a ‘poor doer’ or hard keeper type.
With a concentrated, comprehensive and multi-action approach, FABBY has been proven in extensive research trials over 3 years to help all types of horses, especially those with poor hindgut health, maintain a well-functioning digestive system.
Product Information
FABBY works to improve the function and balance of the hindgut microbiome fermentation system, particularly helping horses which are ‘poor doers’ maintain body condition and providing ‘cool’ energy reserves through better feed conversion. It is beneficial as a daily supplement for working horses with hindgut acid imbalance or ‘acidosis’ from hard feeds containing grain, grain by-products or starch.
FABBY is also an ideal supplement to improve digestive function in aged or senior horses who struggle to maintain body condition despite an adequate diet or who suffer feed sensitivities such as scouring, bloating or loose manure.
Our Concept for FABBY
Kohnke’s Own FABBY is a highly concentrated supplement containing probiotics, prebiotics and additional specific nutrients which help optimise the digestive efficiency of the entire gastro-intestinal system, particularly the hindgut, in all horses.

Supplementation Guidelines
For horses with serious digestive inability, loose manure or scouring problems, provide between 60 – 120 grams daily for 2 – 6 weeks, or as required. For ponies, provide 30 – 60 grams. After the initial period, most horses can be reduced to the maintenance supplementation rate of 30 grams, or 12 grams for a pony.
For a daily premium digestive supplement, the normal supplementation rate is 30 grams for horses or 12 grams for ponies in their daily feed.
Pack Sizes and Days Supply
1 kg pouch (33 days supply)
3.5 kg bucket (116 days supply)
10 kg bucket (333 days supply)
** Days supply is calculated from the 30 gram dose which is suitable for horses (500 kg body weight) for normal supplementation.
What are the signs of digestive problems in my horse’s hindgut?
Some horses can be sensitive to touch around flank or when rugging. Others may show variable ridden temperament, random ‘spooky’ behaviour. Other common signs include sensitive skin, rough and dull coat.
Many horses with hindgut issues are poor ‘doers’ or hard keepers which struggle to maintain condition or normal weight on adequate food. Often excessive food is needed to keep the horse at normal weight, which increases the feed bill.
Which horses are most benefited by FABBY?
Performance horses on high grain and starch diets particularly benefit from FABBY to help reduce the risk of hindgut acidosis or acid imbalance causing acidic ‘sour’ manure, ‘cow pat’ droppings or the passing of poorly digested grain.
Aged horses slow to recover after winter or those which often lose condition in hard times due to reduced digestive efficiency, meaning they do not utilise their feed properly. FABBY can help maintain weight in aged or senior horses as it helps feed digestion.
Horses with a lack of pasture access and fed a predominately hay diet will be helped by FABBY to reduce feed amounts and increase the digestion of roughages.
FABBY is recommended for all horses with poor hindgut function which may lead to passing undigested feed, ‘gassy’ bowels, passing smelly gas or manure, ‘rumbling’ tummies and recurring mild colic symptoms. Scouring horses or those with intermittent loose manure may have digestive sensitivities that can be helped with FABBY, especially after sudden feed changes. These horses may have hindgut microbiota disturbances that lead to long term diarrhoea or chronic anal dribble.
How does FABBY work?
FABBY has a comprehensive and multi-action approach to improving digestive function and the microbiome balance, activity and health of the gastro-intestinal system, especially the hindgut, in all horses.
The probiotics in FABBY include highly researched live yeasts plus bacteria, including Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains, helpful to the equine hindgut. These probiotics are highly concentrated (18 Billion CFU per maintenance dose) and have a role in reducing hindgut acidosis without artificial buffers. Acid imbalance in the hindgut can cause serious problems, including acidic build up, hindgut ulcers or ‘cow-pat’ manure. FABBY can help protect against negative effects of hindgut starch overload in horses consuming high starch diets. The live yeasts in FABBY also help improve digestion of fibre sources to maintain condition in ‘hard keeper’ or ‘poor-doer’ horses.
FABBY includes multiple prebiotics to feed ‘good bacteria’ populations to positively influence the hindgut microbiota. These prebiotics have been shown to help horses adapt to new diets, especially after sudden feed changes and improve conversion of feed to energy in horses with inefficient digestive function.
Active Yeast Components are specially purified parts of the yeast cell, including MOS (mannon oligosaccharides), B-glucans and nucleotides which are designed to block attachment of infectious ‘bad’ bacteria to the hindgut lining and the action of pathogens in the hindgut. The combination of these Active Yeast Components may reduce scouring or loose manure in horses with poor hindgut microbiota balance, especially following antibiotic therapy and anti-inflammatory compounds, such as ‘bute’. The purified nucleotides in FABBY benefit digestive function and may help regenerate the entire gastro-intestinal lining of the stomach, small intestine (foregut) and the hindgut.
The functional fibres in FABBY are a special blend of digestible and indigestible fibres which are designed to stimulate important areas of the gastro-intestinal tract for improved function, helping to regulate food passage through the digestive system. Optimising the working of the hindgut is an important process in healthy manure production and general efficient digestion.
The mycotoxin binders in FABBY constitute a broad-spectrum approach using multiple types to counter a wider range of mycotoxins, but are specially selected to not absorb or bind other feed nutrients, such as vitamins. FABBY is formulated to help horses exposed to feed ingested mycotoxins (up to a moderate level) and reduce risk of digestive upsets or problems in horses with feed sensitivities.
Specific amino acids, such as L-glutamine and L-threonine, are particularly included as they help to regulate the passage of manure through the gastro-intestinal tract and also provide the cells lining the digestive system with a natural source of energy to optimise digestive activity and maintain normal barrier function. L-threonine may help mucin production in the stomach and small intestine, which is beneficial to the foregut and acid buffering in horses in combination with selected nucleotide extracts to help maintain a healthy stomach and intestinal lining. The combination of ingredients in FABBY are uniquely designed to help the entire digestive system and particularly its hindgut microbiome.
How is FABBY different to other hindgut buffers or digestive supplements?
The probiotics chosen for FABBY have a role in maintaining correct gut pH level for optimum digestive function without use of artificial ‘buffers’ that may affect the balance and function of the hindgut. Marine calcium or sodium bicarbonate are high pH buffers that artificially modify hindgut pH balance. The specific yeast types in FABBY help reduce hindgut acidosis through converting the acid to natural forms which are more easily absorbed in horses, which is particularly beneficial in horses on grain-based diets or those at risk of hindgut acidosis.
FABBY is extensively researched with excellent results in extensive field trials for horses all over Australia. The data from research trials is reinforced by the recognised benefits of the ingredients in FABBY in relation to hindgut health and function. FABBY is a true multi-action supplement with a targeted combination of active ingredients, more comprehensive and beneficial than other direct competitor supplements!
Many supplements are also very expensive with some retailing for more than $3.50 per dose per day! FABBY is reasonably and economically priced at only $1.50 – $2.00 per maintenance dose.
What if my horse has Gastric Ulcers?
Many horses, including resting horses as well as performance horses, suffer from stomach acid irritation which may lead to gastric ulcers in their stomach and small intestine. Our popular supplement, Kohnke’s Own Gastro-Coat is the perfect natural supplement to help maintain normal gastric function and shield against acid burn in the stomach and small intestine (the horse’s foregut). Gastro-Coat has a role in helping horses which become girthy, picky eating, reluctant to canter or sensitive when ridden.
In contrast, Kohnke’s Own FABBY is formulated to help the entire gastro-intestinal system, most specifically the caecum and the large intestine (the horse’s hindgut). It is designed to maximise the health and function of this important region in horses. Gastro-Coat and FABBY are highly compatible and generally work in different areas of the digestive system, so can be fed each day to highly sensitive or digestively challenged horses.
Does FABBY help the entire gastro-intestinal tract in horses?
FABBY is beneficial to the entire digestive system in horses. Many ingredients in FABBY help the whole gastro-intestinal tract including the foregut, as it contains nucleotides, yeasts and specific amino acids to help mucin production in the stomach and small intestine. However, most actions of FABBY are particularly targeted to help improve digestive function of the hindgut (the caecum and large intestine) in horses.
Our supplement, Kohnke’s Own Gastro-Coat, is particularly designed to help the horse’s stomach and small intestine when gastric irritation or acid splash is a problem. Gastro-Coat containing ingredients with specific roles and actions in the stomach and small intestine. Gastro-Coat and FABBY are two different supplements with separate focus areas, provide targeted action with different active ingredients that each have specific actions.
FABBY and Gastro-Coat are highly compatible in horses with very significant gastro-intestinal problems or those which are suspected to have hindgut issues, such as acidosis or hindgut ulcers, as well as gastric irritation or stomach ulcers.
How is FABBY different to Gastro-Coat?
Our supplement, Kohnke’s Own Gastro-Coat, is particularly designed to help the horse’s stomach and small intestine when gastric irritation or acid splash is a problem. Gastro-Coat contains ingredients with specific roles and actions in the stomach and small intestine. Gastro-Coat and FABBY are two different supplements with separate focus areas but provide a complementary and targeted action with different active ingredients that have specific separate actions.
FABBY and Gastro-Coat are highly compatible and complementary in horses with very significant gastro-intestinal problems or those which are suspected to have hindgut issues, such as acidosis or hindgut ulcers, as well as gastric irritation or stomach ulcers.
FABBY and Gastro-Coat are also fed in different ways and times – FABBY is perfect as a supplement in the horses’ normal feed daily, whereas Gastro-Coat is often given as a pre-exercise supplement before ridden work or travelling, in a small feed or an oil paste. This is when the specific benefits of Gastro-Coat are most applicable.
